Treating verrucas

What are veruccas?

Verrucas are exactly the same as warts – but occur on the underside of the foot.  They are caused by a virus that will transfer from person to person, often through walking barefoot in communal changing areas.

Why should I treat them?

  • Because verrucas occur on the underside of the foot and create a lot of extra hard skin, they can make walking painful.
  • Left untreated they can get very large – in some cases multiple verrucas covering most of the foot.
  • The drastic effect they have on the skin will compromise resistance to infection and can increase the likelihood of secondary bacterial infections.
  • It is very easy to pass on the verrucas virus either in a shared bathroom or by visiting communal changing rooms.

What is the best way to get rid of them?

There are a number of over the counter products available in the high street.  These can be effective and are worth a try before considering clinical treatments.  Unfortunately for many adults verrucas can prove hard to eliminate with such products and may stay on the foot for up to 10 – 15 years.

Needle ablation procedure. At the Marston Foot Clinic we have over 5 years of successfully treating verrucas.  In the last 3 years we have become one of the primary clinics to offer the needle ablation  procedure. Performed under local anaesthetic the verruca is dealt with by physical destruction of the virus tissue and by stimulating the body’s immune system.

  • Proven to be highly effective – with success rates of over 90%.
  • This is a one off treatment. No lotions or further treatments needed.
  • All follow up appointments included in the price.
  • A second procedure offered free of charge in the unlikely event that the verrucas doesn’t resolve.

Non surgical treatment.  For those who are unsuitable for the ablation procedure we offer an alternative treatment. This involves the regular removal of hard skin at our clinic and the application of tape directly to the verruca’s surface.
